The Avalon is Ranked Number 1 for Safety!
All the fun specs aside, we can probably agree that the most important feature of a vehicle is its safety. If you aren’t safe, then all the charisma of a good-looking carriage and the glee of a smooth ride are just hot air. Luckily, with the 2019 Avalon, you don’t have to sacrifice style for safety: it’s got it all.
East Coast Toyota Dealership in Wood Ridge, NJ is very pleased to announce that the 2019 Avalon has qualified for the highest standing safety award available from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). According to their website, the IIHS is “an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses—deaths, injuries and property damage—from crashes on the nation’s roads.”
Basically, they look at “crash-worthiness,” or how well the occupants of a vehicle are protected in the event of an accident. Additionally, they take into account accident prevention technology, such as front collision warning, automatic breaking and blind spot detection.
How did the Avalon perform in the tests?
Well, in the 6 simulated crash scenarios, it rated at the top of its competitors (with the 2018 Avalon and the 2018 Kia Cadenza the only other two large cars included in the winnings). It got “good” ratings—and keep in mind, “good” is the highest rating available—in five of the six tests: driver side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint. It received an “acceptable” or “good” rating in the passenger side small overlap test.
The IIHS specified that this safety rating is based on opting for the LED projector headlights (which only come standard on some of the trims).
These stats are encouraging because you know if you’re in an accident, Toyota has made the effort to protect you as best as possible. Of course, it goes without saying that it’s always better to avoid being in an accident in the first place. Let’s take a look at some of the features included in the 2019 Avalon that help to prevent accidents from happening at all!
One of the fabulous things about technology is the way it has been developed to keep us safer. Cars nowadays are full of far more accident prevention features than previous models, making the roads safer than ever before, and Toyota has fully embraced the search for ever safer vehicles.
Here are some of the Safety features included in the 2019 Avalon:
- Rearview Camera: Helpful for avoiding fender benders when parking.
- Blind Spot Monitoring: A light in your side mirror will warn you of a vehicle in your blind spot—if you put on your blinker, it will flash to draw your attention to the fact more urgently.
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert: When in reverse, this system detects other vehicles approaching at high speed, to prevent backing into oncoming traffic.
- Adaptive Cruise Control: With the assistance of radar, the speed of your car will self adjust to maintain a pre-set distance between you and the car in front of you.
- Lane Departure Warning: Sensing when you’ve veered from your lane, your car will alert you so you can correct before unintended consequences.
- Lane Keep Assist: When in cruise control, Lane Keep Assist will help to keep your car centered in your lane.
- Forward Collision Warning: Using millimeter wave radar, this warning system beeps to alert you to a potential collision.
- Pedestrian Detection: Along with sensing another car you are about to collide with, your Avalon can also sense pedestrians and give you a warning.
- Automatic Emergency Braking: If your car senses that you are going to collide and you have not yet engaged the brake, it will do so for you. It may also assist you with breaking in fast-brake situations.
- Automatic High Beams: By detecting headlights of oncoming traffic and taillights of cars in front of you, your lights will toggle between low and high beams to make sure you’re set to the safest headlight beam.
Headlights: Remember, if you want to really round out the safety of your Avalon, opt for the better LED lights which provide for extra visibility. You can even opt for cornering lights which not only illuminate turns, but will light the way in reverse too!
Ok, so we’ve covered the most important feature of a car and we know that the 2019 Avalon excels where safety is concerned—but what else does the new design have going for it?
The Toyota Avalon Redesigned: How does the 2019 Compare to Previous Models?
This sweet, redesigned, full-size sedan was built to compete against other large cars—and it has had an outstanding response in more categories than just safety. With a score of 8.9 out of 10, the 2019 Toyota Avalon was given first place in Large Cars by US News & World Report. They base their rankings on the analysis of 14 Reviews, including the findings of professional test drivers as well as reliability and safety ratings.
You can come down to your local Toyota dealership in Ridge Wood, NJ, East Coast Toyota, and test drive the 2019 Avalon, along with some other models and years for comparison. But here’s a quick overview of some of the updated features so you have an idea of what to expect:
In judging the cars, US News places great emphases on comfort—including both interior design and comfort of smoothly moving over bumps and turns. They also consider a quiet cabin as an asset. The Avalon meets all of these criteria with flying colors. The Avalon comes with 5 seats that are well designed for long drive comfort (including the rear seats— don’t forget the passengers!)
Indeed, this is a car you’ll be itching to take on road trips—and not just because it will be so cozy. It’s fun to drive too!
The engine of course is a great consideration—and is also under the scrutiny of US News when judging a vehicle. It must have enough power to accelerate at a comfortable speed for merging on the highway, for example, and have enough maneuverability for ease of driving on winding roads.
The 2019 Avalon handles better than previous models thanks to a lower center of gravity, a wider stance and a new multi-link rear suspension setup.
It has an upgraded 3.5 litre v6 engine with 8 speed automatic transmission, 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. When all is said and done, this is a significant upgrade from the 2018 model.
The hybrid version pairs two electric motors with a 2.5 liter v-4 engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission.
Cargo space is slightly bigger than the 2018 model and includes 16 cubic feet of trunk space (standard on this size vehicle) and fold down rear seats for extra space.
The fuel economy of the 2019 is significantly better than previous models—and better than other large car competitors too. It gets 22mpg in the city and 31mpg on the highway. Of course, you could choose the hybrid (which won second place in safety, by the way) which gets 43mpg in the city and on the highway both.
With 5 USB ports—so you can charge all of your devices at once—and a Wi-Fi hot spot, so you can always have access to the web, the Avalon will keep you plugged in. It also includes a Bluetooth, 8 Speaker audio system, touch screen, and—most excitingly—Apple CarPlay.
Apple Carplay basically puts all the important functions of your iPhone onto the car’s built in display, so you don’t have to fiddle with your phone while you’re driving. This includes your favorite navigation app, music, podcasts, the ability to make calls and send messages, etc—all with your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. It includes Siri voice control and it also works with your cars controls. This feature alone may make the new Avalon significantly safer than the previous models!
Optional: Some of the other optional features include a moon roof, wireless device charging (if the 5 USB ports aren’t enough), navigation and 14 speaker JBL audio system.
